ONAD reassures the public… drainage work is progressing

The drainage works undertaken by the National Sanitation and Drainage Office (ONAD) to mitigate recurring flooding in the Riviera Palmeraie – Rue Ministre – Cité Allabra – Golf culvert outlet into the lagoon sub-watershed, in the Cocody district, and to improve the living conditions of residents in other districts of Abidjan, are progressing.

  • Development works in the Riviera Palmeraie – Rue Ministre – Cité Allabra – Golf culvert outlet into the lagoon sub-watershed, in the Cocody district.
The Office began the development of the Palmeraie – Rue Ministre – Allabra sub-watershed in the Cocody district in 2019. The proposed improvements to ensure drainage of this sub-basin consist of the construction of three flood control dams and the widening of sections of the primary canals and culverts on Rue Ministre, as well as the downstream collectors in the Allabra district, and the conversion of the main canal into a lagoon up to the golf course culvert.

    • As part of its 2019 action plan, ONAD undertook the construction of one of these dams (the Génie 2000 dam), the construction of its downstream structure, and the widening of the canals on Rue Ministre and in the Allabra district over a distance of more than four (4) km. These works are 98% complete.
    • As part of its 2020-2021 action plan, the construction of a second dam (Dam B6) is planned, along with the construction of approximately 800 meters of secondary canals to improve drainage on Rue Ministre. The call for tenders for these works is currently open under number T 903/2020.
    • As part of the Sustainable Improvement Program for Sanitation and Drainage (PADSAD) in the City of Abidjan, implemented by ONAD, the main drainage system is to be upgraded from the ANONO intersection to the lagoon outlet at the Golf culvert, a distance of approximately 3.5 km. These works began in November 2020 and are scheduled to last eighteen (18) months.
  • Construction of Drainage Canals in Yopougon and Attécoubé
To contribute to improving the living conditions of the residents of Abidjan, particularly those in the municipalities of Attécoubé and Yopougon, and within the framework of the PADSAD project, the construction of approximately 21 km of primary canals is planned in the municipalities of Yopougon (Maroc, Niangon, and Camp Militaire Koweït neighborhoods) and Attécoubé (Lokodjoro and Santé neighborhoods). This work began in November 2020 and is scheduled to last 24 months. These works will significantly improve stormwater drainage and, most importantly, stabilize the riverbanks to prevent the collapse of buildings.
