A sludge treatment plant was inaugurated on February 6, 2025, in Anyama-Yapokoi.
It is designed to treat waste and wastewater from septic tanks in households in northern Abidjan. This sanitation system puts an end to the illegal dumping of this waste into the environment by providing users with a dedicated treatment infrastructure.
“Before this plant existed, septic tank cleaners resorted to illegal dumping in low-lying areas. This is dangerous for both people and the environment,” explains Ernest Brou, Head of the Studies Department at the National Sanitation and Drainage Office (ONAD).
The plant thus contributes to environmental protection. It eliminates a source of pollution and limits the spread of diseases related to unsanitary conditions, thereby improving the living conditions of local populations. Solid waste and wastewater are treated there and then used for agricultural purposes. According to Joseph Koffi, the plant manager, “the treated solid fraction becomes fertilizer, and the treated wastewater is used to irrigate the fields.”
With a capacity of 300 m³ per day, the Anyama-Yapokoi plant includes a 3,700 m² drying area, a 350 m² storage shed, a 60 m² operations building, and access roads.
