On instructions from his superiors, Mr. Gildas SIMY, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, accompanied by numerous experts from the Ministry in charge of Construction, the National Bureau of Technical Studies and Development (BNETD), the National Office of Civil Protection (ONPC), as well as Mr. Diabaté Beh, representing the Mayor, visited on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, near the ravine in the Dépôt 9 district, in the Commune of Abobo. “The purpose of the mission was to assess the widening of the thalweg (gully) in order to provide the relevant authorities with a detailed report on how to address this issue sustainably,” he stated, after observing the vast ravine and holding a brief consultation with residents gathered in the United Residents Association of the Dépôt 9 Sotra Abobo District (ARUD 9).
“The ravine is widening at an alarming rate and is a source of fear and landslides. It is a multi-sectoral problem that will require solutions for drainage, construction, and also for the resettlement or relocation of the affected populations,” explained the head of the mission. He reassured the residents that Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé was closely monitoring the situation.
Mr. Simy also took the opportunity to urge caution during this rainy season. “We are in the middle of the rainy season. We urge the public to be more vigilant and, even better, to leave at-risk areas, not just here but everywhere. Because it’s a matter of life and death, and life is precious,” firmly recommended the Deputy Chief of Staff, who was accompanied by Mr. DJARAMADO Yao Paul, Director General of Water and Sanitation (DGHA), and Ms. Hélène BRAGORI, Director of Rural Sanitation (DAR) and Acting Director of Urban Sanitation and Drainage (DAUD).
