Sanitation and Drainage in Abidjan/Compensation The second wave of beneficiaries of the PADSAD Program receives their checks

The Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Public Health (MINHAS), Drissa Diomandé, representing Minister Bouaké Fofana, presided over the check presentation ceremony for the second group of beneficiaries of the Sustainable Improvement Program for Sanitation and Drainage (PADSAD) in the city of Abidjan on Friday, November 29, 2024. The ceremony took place in the conference room on the 14th floor of Tower A.

During the event, Mr. Kouadio Ernest, representing the National Sanitation and Drainage Office (ONAD), indicated that 24 km of drainage canals had been constructed while preserving the existing water catchment areas.

According to him, this work enabled the implementation of the solid waste management master plan and the connection of 5,000 households to the sewer system, while also providing garbage containers for the residents. This resulted in the eviction of 707 people, the second group of whom are receiving their checks today.

Following this, the Paymaster General, Mr. Sanon Adama, commended the patience of those affected and the Mediation team, whose efforts led to this positive outcome. He went on to acknowledge the efforts made by the government through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Public Health.

The Chief of Staff, Drissa Diomandé, emphasized from the outset that President Alassane Ouattara’s government is working for the well-being of the people. This, he explained, led him to partner with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to secure this financing. He specified that the construction of stormwater drainage canals contributes to improving the living conditions of the population while protecting the water catchment areas. He asked the recipients of the checks to use them wisely and urged them not to reoccupy the cleared areas with the funds received. He also encouraged them to trust the Ivorian government, which, through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MINHAS), is working for their well-being.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Koné Soualio thanked the government, through MINHAS, for its efforts in ensuring that those affected received what they were owed. He also requested the Ministry’s assistance in managing other cases.

As a reminder, the PADSAD project aims to reduce flooding and improve living conditions in Abidjan. It includes the construction of 30.6 km of stormwater drainage canals, primarily in Yopougon and Cocody, as well as a Sludge Treatment Plant (STBV) in Anyama.
